The Department of Transport and Planning did a gender impact assessment (GIA) on the Delivering the Tram Plan program.
In this video, Naomi Langdon and Graz Starc talk about why GIAs are important for planning and transport projects. They explain how using a gender lens helped ensure that tram stops and driver toilets did not disadvantage any part of the community.
They discuss the benefits of the GIA, including:
- addressing safety concerns for female tram drivers
- reducing the gender pay gap for female tram drivers
- improving perceptions of security at tram stops through better lighting and facilities.
The GIA helped them uncover hidden problems, create more inclusive solutions and build evidence to use in the future.
